Welcome to the fourth edition of BECoop newsletter!

We start this new year – and already the final of our BECoop work, with a lot of (bio)energy and things to share with our readers!

Last November, BECoop partners met in Italy (Tirano, one of the project pilot areas), for a meeting organised by fiper, topped with a visit of the new biomass community and Valtellina district heating plant (TCVVV) to show partners how it works, where the sustainable biomass comes from, how it delivers energy to the mountain valley and much more. We heard from 3 mayors and a forest manager who explained the bioenergy impact on the local communities and on the forest management, a virtuous circle to prevent climatic disasters impacts. A short video takes you with us on that journey!

As you know now, BECoop promotes a responsible, local, small-scale and sustainable use of biomass resources. We were happy to read the IPCC report released before the summer 2022, highlighting the bioenergy potential as important tool to achieve climate change mitigation if done in small-scales, sustainably and well planned. “The European Union could “triple” the amount of biomass produced on a sustainable basis over the coming decades while helping restore land degraded by industrial pollution, poor agriculture, erosion and climate change”, says André Faaij in an article for EURACTIV. Later that summer, German MEP Markus Pieper posted on Twitter that the “expansion of the renewable energy target to 45% by 2030 was possible with innovation quotas, more cross-border projects, biomass and diversified imports”.

Once again, we are sharing in this newsletter findings from our project and external resources, to provide our readership with interesting material to open debates and feed research.
Enjoy reading,

The team

Did you miss them? Throwback to our events “More women in renewables and energy communities: safeguarding an enabling policy framework” and “From setting up energy communities to making them thrive: what are the tools available?”

BECoop organised, with the support of H2020 W4RES and eCREW as well as “Women Engage for a Common Future”, this online EUSEW event, which gathered a group of expert panellists involved in energy transition, gender equality, and female empowerment. The recording and a comprehensive visual event briefing are available to catch up on what you missed!

The second event, organised by 9 H2020 projects, showcased in an interactive manner 18 tools the projects are making available to people setting up / managing / growing energy communities: citizens, future and existing energy communities, policymakers, other projects / initiatives, RESCoops, etc.

BECoop releases communication and activity reports

For the past two years, BECoop has acted as a driving force gathering other H2020 projects under the umbrella of sister projects, the group organising regular meetings to discuss ongoing activities, plan common events and writing, and more. Two high-level events (see this newsletter FOCUS ON) were co-organised, with briefings prepared to highlight key elements, and a briefing linking energy poverty and energy communities is in the pipeline. A report summarises the activities so far. Another report presents BECoop communication and dissemination strategy towards the end of the project. A report by CBS guides readers to the awareness raising actions for improving bioenergy perceptions and image, organised so far and until BECoop last months. WUELS prepared finally a report presenting the work done to organise the project capacity building programme (trainings and workshops).

Co-definition of community bioenergy heating roadmaps

BECoop provides support to communities and local key stakeholders of the four pilot areas to agree on and co-define with local communities the most promising path for the development of the BECoop RESCoops. Further work will investigate the techno-economic feasibility of the BECoop RESCoops’ vision in each of the project pilots. This report provides explanations on the following aspects, and the approaches followed: conversion of challenges and needs into a RESCoop vision, according to each pilots conditions and characteristics, pre-assessment of quantitative and qualitative information that will be used for the future implementation of each BECoop RESCoop’s vision, as well as co-development of roadmaps, enlisting actions and interventions both up until the end of BECoop but also towards 2030, providing a realistic and solid perspective to the project results.

Our tools
Our Knowledge Exchange Platform goes live!

The Knowledge Exchange Platform is a one-stop-shop lifting collaboration barriers across regions and sectors to share information and knowledge. The platform will have both digital and physical presence and:

  • Creates an easy-to-access repository of knowledge, tools and services in the field of community bioenergy heating.
  • Acts as an observatory/atlas of bioenergy community cases (and community energy cases with high potential to include bioenergy), technologies and service providers.
  • Offers a digital space for fostering cross-regional networking, dialogue and knowledge exchange among community bioenergy actors.
If you missed them

Activating a community energy market for bioenergy: an e-market environment connects biomass heating supply chain stakeholders
BECoop e-market environment supports stakeholders involved in the creation or update of community (bio)energy projects. It demonstrates the various stakeholder interactions and activities/services that must take place to set up an effective and sustainable local supply chain and a community bioenergy project. User-friendly and intuitive, it allows entrepreneurs to identify and contact stakeholders taking part in the supply chain of biomass heating solutions, to carry out their projects, learn from the experience of others and from similar initiatives. An educational and informational vector will soon be included in the environment to help boost local bioenergy supply and demand, mobilize citizens around existing or new community bioenergy projects or increase their feasibility by identifying providers of technical, business, financial, or community model solution providers.

Tapping the full potential of community bioenergy for heating: BECoop self-assessment tool supports the development of cooperative/ community bioenergy projects

To allow several market actors become (bio)energy producers, the BECoop self-assessment tool supports communities in getting prepared to tap the full bioenergy market potential, making them aware of the potential held by their projects. Users can assess the status and potential of community bioenergy. Designed for non-specialised, non-experienced users seeking to assess the current state of a cooperative/community bioenergy project. A report, finalised in October 2022, provides an introduction to the tool.

Our library of useful tools can guide you to the right tool

The toolkit supports developers and operators of community bioenergy and heating projects, with four main categories of tools: technical, business models, community models and related projects.

Discover how to use the tool in this short tutorial!

Our ESEK pilot was included in different platforms and languages, especially thanks to the work done to develop, with CERTH, coffee pellets in a virtuous circle. ESEK is featured as a lighthouse case for replication in other municipalities in Europe in the European Community Energy Municipal Guide, published by H2020 SCCALE.

BECoop webinar series

BECoop partners are holding a series of webinars, from November 2022 to May 2023, to introduce key topics to whomever is interested. The webinars last 45 minutes and are recorded, then made available on our Knowledge Exchange Platform. The first two focused on a biomass introduction and biomass combustion.

Join us for the next ones and add them to your calendars: you will hear from potential synergies for (bio)energy communities, the BECoop tools, biogas plants, district heating, and much more!

BECoop awareness raising campaign

In the format of banners shared on social media and uploaded on our website, the first action consists of “Did you know?” information, sharing key facts and data about energy communities and biomass/bioenergy. We have many more actions planned, exhibitions, articles. Follow us to stay up-to-date and join in on the campaign!
